On occasion, since I was about 15 or 16 (I'm now 30), under certain circumstances, I will have tightness in my chest, wheezing, etc. It has always been after exertion. But it's been exertion with one of the following...
a) cold- usually around 40 degrees F or colder...
b) dust- wind has kicked up a lot of dust...
c) pollen- there's been a high pollen count (I do have spring-time allergies, so I'm not sure if this is another symptom if the hayfever.)

The tightness under my sternum has always taken many hours to go away- 8-10 hours, sometimes overnight. Occasionally, it will be a little less if I can shower right away and rinse off the dust or pollen.

Firstly, Asthma - The Symptoms are, coughing often at night, wheezing, a tight feeling in the chest and shortness of breath are common. Some people may have mild symptoms, while others have severe symptoms resulting in treatment in hospital. Symptoms tend to be worse at night, and first thing in the morning.

Asthma has become more common in the last 20yrs. In the Uk, more than 5 million people - about 1 in 7 children and 1 in 13 adults are believed to have it.

Asthma can run in famlies, and is more likely to develop if someone already has Eczema or Hay Fever.

Excercise is good for Asthma, and sufferers should lead a normal. The risk is reduced by not smoking. Hous dust mite dung, pet hairs, smog and stress, also coughs and colds are triggers.

If you feel any of these are your symptoms, you should see a Dr. He or she would do a peak flow test, and then recommend any medication you would need, they may also suggest an allergie test.

Probably. I have athsma. You should see your doctor. If you don't, you may die. If a serious athsma attack comes and you don't have your inhaler. Simple tests are needed. If your lungs feel like a balloon, then you probably have it.

Athsma is when you can't exhale. Your lungs become so filled with air, that you can't exhale. You are actually facing your windpipe closing to much. If you find yourself without your inhaler, breath in very little air and try to excert as much as you can. It will help decrease the amount of time. Also, you may want to try to start breathing the correct way. Breathing in so your stomach inflates helps you understand that your lungs are filling and and you are exhaling enough air.

One time I had an athsma attack for three days. It was a mixture of allergies and an athsma attack. I was hospitalized. It is important that you get your inhaler and some other athsma medicines, but be sure to confront your doctor soon, because it could get worse.

Your doctor may perscribe an Albeuteral inhaler. It is a steroid, but it opens up your lungs. Ask your doctor for other treatments for your other athsma medicines which may help reduce your athsma attacks.

Sounds like allergies to me, actually. However, asthma and allergies are closely related and have some of the same symptoms. There's a triad of asthma, allergies, and eczema, and they say if you have one of them, it's pretty likely that you have two of them. I'd visit your family practician and get on some daily medications. He might suggest a pill like Zyrtec or Singulair, and may even give you an inhaler for times when you just can't catch your breath.

Its possible, but i doubt it, I can see the dust causing you issues to last 8-10 hours cause it can take a while for your system to get it out so its not irritating your lungs. You could be just inflamed causing swelling to cause it to be hard to breathe and it might take a while for the inflammation to go away.. Depending on what has triggered the inflammation it can take a while for it to go away. If you have had this issue for a while i don't see any reason to not get checked for asthma.

I am not a doctor either, but my asthma does kick in after exertion, and I seem to need more inhaler in humid and high pollen-count environments. So it sounds to me (an asthma sufferer) that you do have it.

if you go to the doctor they will tell you if you have it. the only way you can find out is by knowing what it means...a disease of the respiratory system, sometimes caused by allergies, with symptoms including coughing, sudden difficulty in breathing, and a tight feeling in the chest

if you have that then you might have athsma

You could have allergy related asthma. I was diagnosed three years ago. Talk with your doctor, they will most likely recommend you to a specialist who will run tests. I was put on allergy medications and advair (which works fab for me)

It's possible that you may have asthma but I recommend you see a health care provider for a proper evaluation and treatment options. Please don't ask anyone here for a diagnosis. Only a licensed health care provider (NP, MD, or PA) who has spoken to you and examined you in person can offer a diagnosis.
