I grew up in Jacksonville, FL at my grandmother's house. She had a beautiful shade tree in her front yard that had fruit (not edible) which resembled big, green balls white a milky, white sap in them. She always called it a Sage Orange tree but I haven't been able to find anything online about them... My husband said it sounds like a tree that's pretty common up north where he's from... any ideas what it is? THANKS!

Close. Osage Orange, scientific name is Maclura pomifera. Other vernacular names are Hedge Apple, Bodark. Bodark is from the French Bois d'arc because the wood of this tree is good for making archery bows.

Osage Orange, also known as a hedge ball tree. They are all over in central Illinois and here in the part of Missouri we now live in. The limbs make great fence posts. It has so much natural creosote in it, that bugs don't bother it and the weather doesn't destroy it. They last for 50 years or more.

Sounds like a Bois D'Arc tree if the fruits are very bumpy. We always called them horse apples. The wood is extremely hard and was used by the Indians to make bows. I have also heard that placing pieces of horse apple in cabinets and sheds will help keep roaches away.
