every year my company hosts a large convention and people from all over the world attend. i end up working 15 hour days 20 days in a row, and become a neurotic person during that time. problem is a friend from college likes to stay w/me in my small apartment for the week. she volunteers part time. but mostly it's party, party, party. i'm too stressed out during that time to deal with an unwelcome house guest. i can't think of a way to get out of the situation easily, without hurting her feelings. i can tell the truth and feel horribly guilty or lie and tell her someone else is staying with me, and suffer the consequeces of getting caught, which is more than likely to happen. please help.

I suggest that you say something positive first like you are a very important friend to me or I really enjoy your company (if that's the case) but I really need alone time during the week of the convention.

If she's a good friend then she will care about your needs and not want to intrude on you.

Your only obligation is to yourself. You have nothing to feel guilty about. Rather focus on how good it feels to honor yourself and your needs.

She is a grown woman and can take care of her own needs. You are not responsible for her feelings if she chooses to feel hurt. Those feelings belong to her.

There is absolutely no need for you to feel guilty; you don't owe her any explanation. The best thing to do is just to tell her that the week she had planned would not be a good week for you. You can simply tell her that you have prior commitments with work that will be taking up most of your time and energy. That's all you need to tell her. If she is a true friend, then she will understand and make other arrangements. Don't let yourself feel guilty over this. This is a legitimate concern that you are facing and there is no need to feel guilty over not accommodating her.

Write an nice note stating that your apartment will be unavailable this time, it is being repainted....At least it gets you off the hook for a year.

THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE IF SHE WAS REALLY YOUR FRIEND AFTER YOU TELL HER THE TRUTH THEN SHE'D UNDERSTAND
