I love hair from the 40's/50's, but I've had a hard time figuring out how to get the look for quite some time now. I can do the pomp, but I want it bigger, of course. So, does anyone have tips/ideas? Are there any types of products you would suggest using? Any help would be great. THANKS! xo

In order to get the hair nice and big, comb it foward, tease out the underlying sections (use a spray wax or firm hold hairspray during this step) then smooth over the top layer of hair. Boom, instant big, retro hair!

What it sounds like you are describing is the Beehive hairdo.

What you might want to do is check out the local Library, hair section, costume section, and possibly the 1940's-1950's era books on fades and trends to help.

They will have the photos you need in order to locate the ring that was used to build up the hair and hair was then ratted. I haven't seen the "plastic ring" for those hairdo's for years. Try a Beauty Supply store.

The hair was brought up through the ring and ratted. Then you had your can of hair spray and went to town! Ratting and teasing the hair higher and higher.

To get the really high look, most women used "rats" - hair pieces (if they could afford them) or netting tangles placed under the hair - the hair was combed over the top and hair-sprayed to death to get it to stay.
