My dog won't take her pills anymore. We've tried hiding them in pill pockets, peanut butter, cheese & some deli meat. Any suggestions?

You just have to open her mouth, place the pill as far back as you can, and rub her throat. That's what I have to do with my puppy. The vet taught me that one.

Make you several bite size balls out of the food of your choice. Raw hamburger, cheese chunks, peanut butter sandwiches, even canned dog food . Liver sausage works well, it has a strong smell. Put the pill in one bite. Toss the dog 2 or 3 bites with no pill, toss the one with the pill and immediately offer the next one by hand.

I use good old cheap american cheese, its soft and you can really ball it up and mine eat it right up. I foster animals for a rescue organization, and usually I have giving out many pills a day between them all. If push comes to shove - that is exactly what I do - shove the pill down the dogs throat. Just life her chin, and place the pill as far back of her throat as you can, and close her mouth. Keep her head tilted and gently stroke her throat to induce her to swallow. It's not alot of fun, but if she really needs her meds, then it's the best way to know for sure she is getting them.

I've never used food to hide pills in. Although it works for some, I just pry open the mouth. Put the pill as far back to the throat as possible. Close the mouth and hold the snout closed. Rub the throat as it makes them swallow.

Did you use chunky peanut butter? That worked well for us. Our dog couldn't tell the difference between the peanuts and the pills ;)

Cottage cheese worked too ....

I've crushed the pill up and mixed it in with the food or peanut butter and that seemed to work.

Maybe the pill is too big?? If so, try cutting it in half.
I know you said you tried cheese, but have you tried a small chunck of velveta? My dog always went for it. Or try a chewy cookie (not chocolate) you could also disolve it in some water/ milk.

You should grind the pills up and put them in the food and mix it up well. If that doesn't work, ask your vet if there is a substitute pill or another option to get your dog to eat it. GOOD LUCK!

get a cheese cube and hide it inside that. It works good because you can stick it in there deep so it wont fall out and id she wants the cheese she has to eat the pill.

We used to have to stick it all the way in the back of her mouth for her to take it but then started using this method and it works SO much better.

The only way I have been able to give my dog pills is by disolving it in water and use a dropper and put it in the dogs mouth and sqeeeeeeeze!

I have to put my dog in my lap, turn her on her back, pry open her snout and put her medicine on the back of her tongue near the hump. I then have to hold her snout shut with one hand, while rubbing her throat with the other. My dog is a testy son-of-a-gun, so she will hold it as long as she can w/o swallowing. I then blow gently in her nostrils so she is forced to swallow so she can then open her mouth to breathe. It used to take lik 5 min to get her to swallow, but now only about 40 seconds. Make sure you have some water on hand to give them. And give them a treat everytime they get their meds. That way they can associate pills with a positive experience.
