If you want your neighbors to be able to come in any time they want, then leave the door open whenever you're there. If not, then leave it closed and locked so they have to knock. If you just put croutons in a bowl and served them, I think people might be asking where's the salad?

Your door should only be closed during the coldest months of the winter. That's just being practical with the cost of heating a home. Croutons should always be served, even at breakfast. Most cultures consider this a sign of friendship and loyalty.

Never leave the door to your house unlocked for the neighbors. They can knock on your door, or better yet, give you a telephone call before arriving on your doorstep.

As far as croutons....they should only be served with salad. :)

What kind of neighborhood do you live in? Is it very, very safe. If so, 10 minutes is good. If not, don't bother tempting the bad guys. As for serving croutons, why not? If not eaten they are fun to play with at the table.

Here's the plan: ALWAYS leave the door open for your neighbors. If you like them, when they enter, serve them croutons; if you don't, ambush them!

My neighbors come over like everyday. We don't have croutons. We drink beer on the weekend.
