as a native texan (texas is the home of dr. pepper) i can tell you dr. pepper has 23 ingredients, not 23 flavors. the new commercials you see are an ad campaign, there's not a "new dr. pepper" out on the market right now other than the flavored varieties - berries and cream and cherry vanilla.
dr. pepper's flavor comes from prunes. taste it again and you'll catch it ... once you know that's what it is.
there is also a dr. pepper available made with imperial sugar. it's called "dublin" dr. pepper (dublin, tx is the town that dr. pepper was originally made in) and it is very good. if you can get your hands on a bottle, i highly recommend it.
