As a Texas Southern Baptist, I have to disagree with Mr. Richards. (Jim not Keith)
Mr. Richards may have been referring to this...
Hosea 4:11 Prostitution, wine, and new wine take away understanding.
Following are direct quotes from the Bible:
Genesis 14:18 Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine: and he was priest of God Most High.
Proverbs 31:6 Give strong drink to him who is ready to perish; And wine to the bitter in soul:
1 Timothy 5:23 Be no longer a drinker of water only, but use a little wine for your stomach's sake and your frequent infirmities.
John 2:3-11 When the wine ran out, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no wine." Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does that have to do with you and me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Whatever he says to you, do it." Now there were six water pots of stone set there after the Jews' manner of purifying, containing two or three metretes apiece. Jesus said to them, "Fill the water pots with water." They filled them up to the brim. He said to them, "Now draw some out, and take it to the ruler of the feast." So they took it. When the ruler of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and didn't know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the ruler of the feast called the bridegroom, and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and when the guests have drunk freely, then that which is worse. You have kept the good wine until now!" This beginning of his signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
I know that's probably a little long-winded, but it sure sounds like Mr. Richards was too. I hope this helps you in a positive way.
Oh yeah, I couldn't find it, (believe it or not) but it also says in the Bible somewhere, something like, "Let us drink of the wine, but let us also know when it is time to replace the cork.

Nothing wrong with wine as a beverage...and yes, Jesus turned water into wine at the wedding feast of Cana. Like anything else...moderation is the key. I wouldn't want to walk into a church to hear a sermon if I was falling down drunk....now that would impede my hearing the message of Jesus Christ....but then I definitely would not want to hear this guy preach anyway.
I'm lol....wondering if he had a few just before speaking? That would impede the thinking process.

I agree with Mr. Richards that it CAN impede one's efforts to find Jesus.
I don't agree with him that it DOES impede one's efforts all the time.
While drunkenness is condemned in the Bible, the moderate and responsible consumption of alcohol is mentioned in a favorable light many times in the same book.

Maybe ol' Jim should have been a bit more specific. "Abuse of alcohol" would have been more correct. I wonder if Mr. Richards needs some new writers?? I'm available!

Yeah, and have we heard word one about what happened after he did that? I'll bet not a single parable was uttered once the drinking started at that party. And did you know that his followers tripled among certain ne'er-do-wells because of that, only to abandon the faith when they realized he wasn't going to do it again? And how many livers did he have to heal?

From my knowledge of the Bible. Drinking alcohol is not a sin it is getting drunk that is the sin. I believe it is in Ephesians where Paul tells the church not to get drunk where in is excess but instead be drunk with the spirit of the lord.

I was taught in church that wine as we know it today is not what it was back then because it didn't sit long enough to turn into wine that it was actually grape juice
