Right, this actually happened today.
There are three girls, X, Y, and Z sitting in that order in a row of desks. They are given an assignment to answer three questions, each taking five minutes to answer. They decide that if each girl does one question then they copy each others' answers, they will take less time.
What is the quickest time they can all have answered one question and copied the other two? taking into account the following conditions:
*A girl must complete her own question before copying anyone else's
*Two girls next to each other can copy from a book at the same time
*A girl must have her own book to copy the answer into

1. X, Y and Z all answer one question
2. X and Z copy from Y, while Y copies from X
3. Z places her book between Y and X, who both copy from it
4. Z takes her book, then copys from X
if yuo say that the time to answer a question is A and the time to copy a question is B, then:
Time = A + 3B
So, if it took 5 minutes to answer a question and 3 minutes to copy one, it would take the girls 14 minutes, if it takes any longer than 3 minutes twenty seconds to copy a question, then it would have been quicker for every girl to answer her own questions.

Technically the question is unanswerable.... While we know the time to answer is 5 minutes, the part of the equation which states how long it takes to copy an answer is missing. We can not assume that it is the same 5 minutes, since it would be quicker to copy the answer as the equation states.

You forgot a key piece of information, how long does it take for a girl to write down the copied answer.
ANSWER: 11 MINUTES.
So:
5 minutes total--each girl writes down her answer to her question
Girl X and Y do a quick swap and write down answers
Girl Z copies down Girl X answer at the same time time that Y is copying Girl X answer ( Don't know copy time )
Girl X swaps with Girl Z to get Girl Z answer ( don't know copy time). Girl Y copies Girl Z answer at the same time.
Girl Z copies Girl Y answer at this time.
So
5 minutes + 2( copy time )
