Absolutely though it is not the direct cause it is the contributing factor. The "stomach" flu causes nausea vomiting and diarrhea. the vomiting and diarrhea causes electrolyte imbalances and dehydration which is the actual culprit of death. This occures in very young, old and susceptible individuals typically with pre-existing conditions though can affect the seemingly healthy. This occurs when they go into a condition called MODS or for the layman Multi organ system failure which leads to death or sudden cardiac arrest from fatal arrhythmia's caused by the severe electrolyte imbalance. (Primarily Potassium, Sodium and Calcium)

It is theoretically possible to die from anything, but in all practicality, it is quite rare for someone living in an industrialized country (by which I mean Western Europe, North America, Australia/NZ, and Japan) to die from an upset stomach unless there is extreme negligence involved.

if they become dehydrated enough, yes. this is usually only the most extreme cases, like the very young or the elderly that have preexisting conditions.
