Hi, some dogs chase their tails because their anal glands have become impacted. These are glands either side of the anus (under the tail) which contains a thick liquid which in the wild dogs used to rub their bottoms against a tree or other objects to mark their territory - much the same as lions, etc do in the wild.

Nowadays with domesticated dogs and the variety of foods being fed, these anal glands can become impacted and on occasions may need squeezing by a Vet to release the secretion (not a very pleasant smell - I warn you!) the dog then feels great relief. Some Vets will show you how to perform this action yourself if you are confident enough.

Another indication that this may be the case is if the dog is "scooting" on his bottom to relieve the irritation/itchiness or trying to bite the top area of his tail.

Good Luck! Sandie

Dogs have a tendency to chase animals. Young dogs chase their tails as a way of practicing wen the time comes to chase animals.....Older ones do it to keep themselves busy.....

Apart from fun, they also do this when they have worms. They can feel the worms coming out so they are trying to grab them (esp when followed by them dragging their butts along the floor).

Yucky!!!!

If I had a tail, it would keep me amused for hours.

Wouldn't you chase something that keeps following you around, teasing you by darting in and out of your eyesight, but never steps up to be properly introduced?

Boredom, give the dog something to keep it occupied. Toys and chew sticks work for my pooch.
