Plasma TV's are expensive, cool, sleek, and top of the line machines. But DON"T BUY ONE!!!!!!!!They are reliable to an extent. They will turn on when you want but you should be aware of a few things:::
Most people who buy Plasma TV's don't realize all the things that can ruin it.
If you watch dvd's a lot then the black bars that are sometimes on the tv (even on a wide screen) can become "burned" into the tv (the same with LCD). If you watch things that have static pictures (things that stay the same for long periods of time) then they can be burned into the tv and you will have "ghost" lines that will look like faded lines whenever you watch something. Also, if you watch tv a lot and have that tv on constantly (or on only a little over a long period of time) the plasma in the tv will become blured or spot and when that happens, no more clear picture. Over time, these problems will probably go away as newer and better ways of building plasmas are born. They are reliable, but like i said. Many things can happen to them. I would recomend the new, thinner rear projection tv's. I bought the samsung 62" and it works just as well, has HD, HDMI, DI, Component, but you don't have to worry about Burn marks, the plasma wearing out and having dead spots. So, if your heart is set on a plasma like mine was for a long time, and you do get one, follow the Plasma Care procedures and don't watch movies unless it takes up the whole screen.

Plasma TV makers claim is 60,000 hours of life. I think Plasma TVs are pretty reliable as long as you follow certain rules. For more details on plasma care check this link
http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/plasmatv/plasmatv-lifespan.html
I also want to let you know that Panasonic recently announced that they will be releasing new line of plasma TVs (Series 9). They have better quality of picture, 15% lighter and better burn in resistance.
Hope that helps.. I might just wait till the new series and buy it :)

i would not buy a plasma tv ever becuase if you are an avid tv watcher the plasma in the tv will run out and it will look super faded and then you have to buy more plasma for the tv which you cannot install yourself and will end up costing you half of what the tv cost i would rather buy an lcd or a dlp tv.

Simply put you need time to answer your questions about
Plasma TVs. Just as new car models are introduced or new
car companies, we as consumers need time to "see" their
reliability unfold.
I am a great believer in Consumer Reports magazine. In general
if they don't have enough data or time to research then I wait.
One thing I have read on Plasma sets is that they get very hot
while running. This becomes a safety concern to me.
Much like yourself I am debating buying one, but I'm going to
put my desire aside to watch Veronica Mars in blazing plasma.
Remember, time heals all, but it also shows all.
Take Care.

Terry:
If you get a good one, they are very reliable. Pioneer & Panasonic are the best I have seen, and both have good reputations & warranties. If you are worried about reliability, you can always buy an extended warranty from some place like Best Buy (but personally I don't advise it).
Good Luck

half life 10 years. should last 20. depends on the brand you get. Dell has an extended warranty and complete care which will cover accedental damage as well. Go for a high end w/ hdtv- stay away from edtv as technology is going to hdtv or bluray (sony)
