The airlines will post the maximum dimentions for length, width, and height. Check their web for their limitations. They differ from airline to airline.

For simplicity, assume your backpack/suitcase/purse is a box. Measure the long side, the short side, and the other side. Make these length, width, and height, and see if it exceeds the limits. Don't worry about which is wich, because you can always put the bag in sideways or upside-down.

Checked baggage on most airlines is "Not exceed 62 inches (158 cm) when you total length plus width plus height"
