They're all pretty expensive, but I'd say San Diego is cheaper than LA and the Bay Area. Or you could try Bakersfield or Sacramento.
Generally the farther away from the coast you are, the cheaper it will be.

Depends on whether you'd like to live in Northern or Southern California-- they are practically like two different states.
In Southern California, there is an adorable town called Ramona. We have some friends who live there. Its this tiny little rural town that sits next to rolling green hills. It is about 30 minute East of Oceanside. So while the town has that All-American small town feel, you can be to the beach, bigger towns and Anaheim in about 30-45 minutes. And it is less expensive than living in San Diego or other big cities down there.
As for Northern California, Sanoma area is breathtaking, but can be a bit pricey. All of California is pricey these days, but I suppose that is relative. Look into Gustine. It is located between Fresno and Modesto, along Interstate 5. It is a quiet little town that is perfect to raise a family in and everyone knows everyone. It was recently featured in a Coca Cola commercial as an All-American Town. It is 1 hour driving distance from San Francisco, Monterey, and other cool cities and sites.

I live in Redondo Beach, which yeah is pretty expensive...California is expensive. Maybe you should move into an apartment in Hollywood or the beach? You need to be financialy fit. Even the ghetto neighborhoods are expensive. Your not going to find a nice house for the price of $300,000. Most of them are close to the millions or are way past the millions. Dont just move there because you just want to tell your friends that you live in California, if you do that, then you wont really see California for what it really is, the Golden State! I just always lived there, i was born in LA. I love the weather and the beach. You dont want to buy yourself a nice home but have no money left to furnish it and make it look nice instead of empty. California isnt the cheapest place to live, and the gas prices....skyrocketing!

Better be prepared to ghetto up! Everywhere you go in California is expensive. I think NorCal is more expensive then SoCal, but you can get into areas that are cheaper than others. The Inland Empire (Riverside and San Bernardino Counties) are statistically the cheapest in Cal. but they are getting expensive too. Good luck!

Up and down the central valley, from Chico to Fresno. Tons of pocket neighborhoods are popping up everywhere throughout the valley in the suburbs of the bigger cities like Fresno, Stockton, Sacramento...The further north, the cheaper. Yuba City, Lincoln, Roseville are all in the Sacramento region that is blowing up right now at semi reasonable prices. Plus the benfit of living right in the middle of Cali is that your a few hours to the coast, a few hours to the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and a half days drive to So Cal. I recommend it up here.

You can rule out L.A. then. You can pretty much rule out all of Southern California. The places that are not that expensive and not ghetto are cities in the desert and the central valley.
