Sacramento or one of the cities closer to the Sierra Nevada Mountains (just above Sacramento) like Rocklin. Sacramento is a nice city because of it's vast choices of schools and arts exhibits, without being too big of a city such as Los Angeles and San Francisco. Everywhere you go in Sac, you still feel like you're in the suburbs. Plus, traveling to the beach or the other direction to Lake Tahoe are only 2 hours either direction.

Oakland! Why? There is access to rapid transit to get to San Francisco and you can take a commuter train to Sacramento.
Plus it's a beautiful city.
Sacramento is nice. In the summer when the delta breezes are not strong, the sunsets are nuclear orange because of the thick layer of air pollution.

lodi!

it is a cute little town that is not expensive. it is very central to all the good stuff in california (bay area, sacramento, yosemite, tahoe). it has a good school district. and the playboy bunny who lives with hugh heffner grew up there and visits frequently with mtv and such.
