It's normal honey. Happens to my cousin's 3 yr old dog too. He's afraid of slamming doors, firecrackers and thunder.

Could be the loud sound.
I have a 5 year old Yorkie that is terrified of the rain and thunder because we went through hurricane Isabel about 3 years ago. I think the sound of trees hitting the ground and our house really freaked him out. When it rains and thunders, he sits right beside me and trembles pretty bad. You can acutally get your dog tranquillizers for that. My little one only weighs 7 pounds, so I won't even consider a tranquillizer for him.

Some dogs never grow out of being afraid of thunder. I have a 15 yr old dog who still hides when he hears thunder. He also hates fireworks, so july 4th is torture for him, poor baby!

Animals can sense the change in the barometric prssure, as well as see the lightning and hear the booming thunder. The loud noises scare them. Heck it scares me sometimes too when it gets so lous.

Dogs have very sensitive hearing. Thunder doesn't happen every day so it's not something they're used to. My cat does the same thing. (in fact she prefers to hide in the bathtub which is exactly what they tell you to do during a tornado!)

It is a primal reaction for most dogs. You will see this with most dogs when fireworks go off too. It is a scary sound that they can not place. As to lighting, I have been told they can smell the electricity but I don't know if that is true or not.

They aren't afraid of lightning but the thunder that comes with it. My shih tzu has sensitive ears so we have to hold him when there is thunder and a bath is given to our golden retriever.

its normal.well i think its normal.they're still not use to it and they have very sensative hearing remember?they get scared and don't know what to do!they're thinking the world is coming to an end!!! when they are frightened do not punish them!! hold them and help them forget what is happening!! maybe you could give them some warm milk. i did that with my lab and he is no longer afraid!! but remeber do not give them too much milk!!
HOPE THIS HELPS!!!
