Well... I liked by best guy friend's brother so I spoke to him first making sure he would be okay with it because I didn't want to jeopardize our friendship. Just be like, "I like your sister and out of respect for you and our friendship, I want to make sure that you are cool with it". It worked out great for me and now my friend's brother and I are engaged

It's the buddy rule - don't ask the sister out without your friend's consent.
I broke the buddy rule and lost a friend as well as straining the relationship he had with his sister.

most likely you should leave her alone because you could jeoparadize the relationship with your friend and ruin a good friendship. There are enough girls in the world for you to find someone else.

It depends on who the friend is and also if you feel strongly about this girl then go for it. You won't know if you don't try and also EXPECT the UNEXPECTED.
