Generally when someone dies of old age, but has no major medical problems, they simply go to sleep and do not wake up.

Pain can be a problem when there are medical concerns such as a major organ failure or cancer. In this day and age the hospice system in the United States is there for the terminal patient and when it is known that a patient has 6 months or less to live, hospice steps in and assists that person to be as pain free as possible until they pass.

I was with 2 terminally ill people who were under hospice care and both passed away very peacefully. Both had painful medical conditions (one cancer, the other complications of diabetes) and hospice was absolutely wonderful in eliminating their pain so they could die in peace.

No one dies of old age, so the answer is no. Old people are more susceptible to illnesses or other things like heart attacks, most of which are painful or at least uncomfortable, and often the treatment is very uncomfortable also.

"Old age" is not a disease and people do not die from it. Rather, they die from specific ailments and body function failures that may be related to aging. So it makes a difference which ailment or specific organ fails...and whether one has pain medication or not.

My grandma just died of old age. Her doctor said she had outlived her organs. She wasn't really in pain. Her death was very peaceful. She just simply took a last breath and never exhaled. It was like she was going to sleep.

We are all dying of old age. Every day, we get a day older and a day closer to death.
