How can I make Tbird to open http links using Firefox instead of IE ?

I have already set the user_prefs for network.*.http to firefox. That
doesn't work.

You must set firefox as a default browser. To do so, open firefox, click on Tools > Options, in the General tab, default browser checkbox should be checked.
