Frontline plus kills fleas, flea eggs, and ticks and helps to keep them from coming back. It takes about 24 hours to fully spread through the dog's body and start working. It is a monthly application but can be used up to every two weeks if there is a bad flea and/or tick problem.

K9 Advantix kills and repels fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes and helps to keep them from coming back. It takes about one hour to start working. It is a monthly application that can also be used up to every two weeks if there is a bad problem. It works great for dogs but is extremely poisonous to cats so be careful.

Preventic Collar can be used if there is a heavy infestation of ticks but it can also be poisonous if licked. It is only recommended to be used in extreme cases. It can be used in conjunction with Frontline Plus or K9 Advantix but must be removed 24 hours prior to and after the application.

There is also a pill called Capstar that will kill and detach every flea on your dog within a half hour of consumption.

The best way to manually remove a tick is to put a small amount of rubbing alcohol on them first because it will immobilize them. Then use tweezers and grasp the tick at its head and pull it out. Don't be afraid if a small amount of your dog's skin comes out with it. It is actually better to have this happen then to have the tick's head remain buried into the dog. It will only hurt your dog for a second and he will get over it.

All of these products can be obtained at your veterinarian's office. Never ever buy any of them from a store, catalogue, or online pharmacy because the companies who make these products ONLY SELL TO VETS so what you're getting elsewhere is usually a counterfeit product and could be harmful to your dog. Never ever use a topical flea control (ESPECIALLY HARTZ OR SARGEANTS) from a grocery store, feed store, or pet store because they use harmful chemicals in their products that have been known to kill pets.

ONLY USE PRODUCTS THAT YOUR VETERINARIAN SELLS!

Good luck with your problem and I hope I've been helpful!

Never just pull the tic out with tweezers - it can leave it's head buried under the skin and cause infection. Smear with vaseline to stop it breathing and then carefully remove with tweezers.

Tics will just drop off once they've had their fill - so don't worry too much if it's just one. Just beware of the diseases they carry in certain countries.

I had a tic once. I called it Trevor but it droped off after a day or two.

There are many ways, but the one I have found that works fastest and is sure to remove the entire tick is to spray a bug repellent with deet directly on the tick. It will back out in less than a minute, and you can chose how to dispose of it from there. Stomping (which only works if they're engorged), burning, or burial at sea are some of the options.

i used frontline....worked well..u shouldnt pluck them off though...that pulls some of their skin off or can sometimes leave the head stuck to the skin...which can cause infection.....you should also have the area where your dog is cleaned and sprayed so that there wont be a risk of more ticks or eggs surviving to get back on your dog...

After 38 years of breeding dogs, I have discovered REVOLUTION!..Where has it been all my life!
It protects against heartworm, lyme disease, Mange mites, ear mites, West nile, and of course fleas and ticks.
It is a spot-on application, to be applied every month.
