I think the station is there to provide extra security for guests of the city. With all the street vendors that line the streets at night, it's probably important that there is a visible police presence. Another side benefit for guests of the city, is that the officers are a safe person they can go to for directions and information, a service I found they are cheerful to provide.

Time's Square is one of the biggest tourist destinations in New York City. Many large cities will have sub-stations located in or near high-traffic visitor areas. Anaheim PD in California has a tiny sub-station located at the Downtown Disney area of the Disneyland Resort. Las Vegas PD in Nevada has a sub-station just south of the Strip. It allows for a local police presence and allows for quick response and speedy access to reinforcements if needed.

Way back Times Square was infested with prostitutes, pimps and druggies. So, they established a post there to keep things in order and to drive the undesirables away.

So, it's still there today to keep monitoring.

So they can handle really fast if somthing happens in that area, and since there's a lot of crime activity it's logical.
