If you have a valid basis to immigrate and file the appropriate application, and along with that application you file a separate form for work authorization, the regulations state CIS (formerly the INS), has 90 days to process it. Some offices process the work permit the same day, others take more than the 90 days. It all depends on the basis for your immigration in the first place, and how busy the office is.

It is not OK to work while you are waiting for your work authorization.

How would you pay rent and buy food if you don't work?
You are forced to find a job with or without SSN.
If you came on a work visa, a SSN should be issued to you in less than a week after arrival. Good luck!

NO!!! You could get a fine and even deported. You need a valid ss# so that you can file your taxes at the end of the year. As for the time issue that depends on the office that you put your papers at. I know that the one in Dallas takes forever. It took me 3 years to get my valid ss#. good luck!
