I'm working on a novel where much of the story is based inside a cathedral and where a significant character's father is a priest.
I think I read once in certain places there was a certain member (members...?) of the clergy who lived in this little building next to a church (or might've been cathedral). In short, building for living in next to church or cathedral. What's it called and who lives in it? Do they even live in those any more?

Priests usually live in places near or attached to the church, sometimes called rectories. They live in aparments and have communal dining areas. Generally, their offices are in the same building on a lower floor. I am not certain if this is the case with cathedrals, but it's pretty standard for churches.

A) The living quarters of a priest is called a rectory.

B) The bishop lives in a residence. And it may not always be right next to his cathedral.

C) And your novel is either about Anglicans, Episcopalians or is a polemic about Catholics. I'd be interested to know which.

At my church it's called the Rectory and all the priests of the congregation live there. It is basically a house so a visiting bishop or really anyone could live there.

Yes, it's called a parsonage and is owned by the church. The Pastor and his family live in the house.

Many churches (Protestant and Catholic) used to have parsonages. I don't think many have those anymore. I went to a church which had a parsonage, but it was seen as being too spartan, and it was turned into a Sunday School building.
