We used to do 'spotta jottas' as children after we went on an extended teach travel and we do them with our young ones now. Basically involves an extended record of random matters that the youngsters might (or would possibly not) see at the travel. I consider we incorporated more than a few colored vehicles, a airplane, a scorching air balloon, each kind of flora and fauna possible (adding a rhinoceros, which strangely the 6 yr historical insists she noticed) and some thing else you'll consider of. Keeps them entertained for a long time. We do really plenty of seven/eight hour trips now and the women have a tendency to have CD avid gamers (affordable £five ones, whole with headphones), DS's (no affordable models, sorry!), books, tons of snacks and recreation capped beverages and their 'spotta jottas'. There are nonetheless a couple of bushy moments behind the auto however we get there OK subsequently :)

I know you said you didn't want to get a DVD player but, I've traveled a bunch with my 3 year old, trains, planes and automobiles, hahaha, anyway, we always pack her favorite toys and a few new ones stuck in the travel bag as well. These are toys that normally she will play with for long periods of time but as soon as we're in the car, she is bored of them, even the new ones. For our last big road trip we decided it was worth our sanity to invest in a DVD player. The DVD works, she enjoys one movie during the trip and she's a much happier traveler.

The best things for a toddler would be things that aren't messy and things that you wouldn't be constantly picking up off the car floor. Just bring along things like a stuffed animal, something that lights up and plays music/talks etc, or some books to look at. Here are some other things you could try:
