I prefer Philips, but I have to agree Sony is better.

Between the two, definitely Philips. I, myself, have a Philips DVD player that is still working and has lasted 5 years. Sanyo, from asking others, is not as reliable. The others are right though, Sony is the best for TV's, especially for HD.

Philips has done a better job of incorporating new technologies than Sanyo

No they are not very good. They used to be the old "Goldstar" brand from Korea which was only sold through discount stores and they were usually brought in so consumers would have a lower-end brand to purchase. They have been trying to become a 'player' in the TV world, but they have not seem to have caught up. They do deceptive practices like getting Indian Marketing companies to constantly search or post questions on various forums to generate 'buzz'. My spider sense tells me the "troll" is strong around here. Edit: On the same page with this question is a post about a 1.5 year old LG television with a corner coming loose and flopping around. Another post a few minutes ago is complaining about input lag with a brand new LG television. You can change the name from "Goldstar" to "LG" to try and hide the sins of the past, but quality control (or lack of) still exposes itself.

sony own sanyo so it should be good since you are comparing this two brands then go for philips its better.

i have a sanyo and i have had it for years and it still works like new my parents have had a sanyo for almost 6 years

Phillips...all Sanyo's I've had were crap! I have a Phillips that has lasted for years.
