Get a copy of the dummies book for pit bulls, there's tons of useful info in those books. I wouldn't worry too much about chasing and biting tails. He's probably just bored and looking for something to do.

Your puppy is bored. He needs to play and get out more. Whenever he does that you need to distract him with a toy or a walk or something more enjoyable than tail chasing. Correct this problem before it becomes an obsessive compulsive disorder (which is more common than you think). You have a wonderful, intelligent breed. Provide him with obedience training, it's a great stimulant for intelligent dogs. Teach him new tricks. Take him for a car ride. Let him play with other dogs in a dog park. Socialize him with lots of people. These dogs have a terrible reputation. The more you do with your dog as a puppy, the better behaved dog you have as an adult. I strongly urge you to watch The Dog Whisperer series on The National Geographic Channel on cable. Cesar Millan has a wonderful approach and you can learn a lot from him.

I wonder if maybe he has impacted anal glands. Does he scoot on the floor at all? This can also be a food allergies so if there aren't any other signs I would switch to a different brand of food like Pro Plan or Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul. Both are good foods although the Chicken Soup is best.

Puppies and even old dogs chase their tails when they are bored and trying to burn off their extra energy. Your puppy probably needs more exercise. When he starts to chase his tail stop him, then play ball with him or take him on walk. Just make sure you are consistent.Replace the unwanted behavior with something more positive for you and your dog. Good Luck!

Are you sure he's not just chasing his tail and biting at it because...he's a puppy?
Puppies with lots of energy do silly things! It may not have anything to do with fleas, allergies, or itches of any kind.
If you really want to stop him, make sure he gets plenty of exercise (a tired puppy is a good puppy), and keep him occupied with toys.

My hubby used to have a dog that did that. the Vet said that is was some form of seizures. I would take him to the vet ASAP. My husbands dog actually bit the end of his tail off! Best of luck!

His tail or his lower back or his butt? If it's his tail he is probubly playing. His lower back is something else like fleas, mites(invisible to the naked eye)or a skin allergy. The butt could be just itch from .....use.

Please see the vet!! It can be seizures as mentioned, or another neurological problem. I have seen at least one dog that eventually attacked the tail resulting in it having to be amputated!!!
