I am a mother of an 18 month old and i have started a daycare out of my home so i could stay home with my child. I have 4 other kids that i watch ages 1-3. I want to teach these kids basic things like numbers, colors, ABC's, and so on, but i have no idea where to start. there is such an age differance in all of the kids and they cant all learn the same things at the same time. do you know of any websites that would be helpful in assisting me in teaching kids? thanks!

You don't want them to know too much before they start public school or they will become bored in kindergarten. You can teach them the ABC song, some letter sounds, letter symbols, numbers and number symbols. Play "I spy" with them. Get some object around the house (about 5 for each lesson). Say "I spy something that starts with the sound "mmm." Make sure you use lower case symbols. You can also play counting games. Have the numbers 1-10 written on strips of paper (or use some from a game you may have). Get some objects (rubber erasers, toys cars, rocks...). They can then match the quantity with the symbol. These ideas will be great for the 2 and 3 year-olds.

Use lots of manipulative's with them. This will help build their hand strength so they are well prepared for writing. You can use Lego's, play dough, have them use a scrub brush to wash tables, the floor or scrub carrots.

These are some basic skills that you can work on with the older children in your care: recognize their name, learn 8 basic colors, cut with scissors, dress themselves, take care of bathroom needs.

Here are some of my favorite websites that may help you. Good luck!

you do need to seperate the kids with that difference in ages.

pbs.org.. mr rogers website is very helpful..in all kinds of educational needs.

i found that having a print enriched environment helps...meaning one one item write the word on their ( peice of paper print the word..chair)

every day have 5 minutes of circle time count each of the children...then have them repeat.. have colors up march in a follow the leader parade saying red yellow blue...
see fi the kids copy you. have abc out and do a new letter every day.

you can go to a preschool in your area and see what they suggest..if you are worried about your printing skills... see if you can't do some work for that teacher. Maybe in the summer she may not have anything but this fall...

shapes do the same... you can really have fun...dont try to make all the kids follow..they will just get started...some days will go better then otehrs...

trust me I was a preschool teacher for 13 yrs.

google pre school on line ...see what you come up with...

education is not the enemy of enthusiam...
you need both to have sucess.

GOOD LUCK

Well, i work in an elementary school for kindergarten. If I were you, I would definately seperate the children when you are teaching them because of the age differences. For the younger children, I would focus on very simple 1-10. Use colorful bears, smiley faces, whatever can get their attention. Songs are very important to all ages because it'll help them learn. Get some learning CD's that count and say like colors and abc's. For the older children, if they have 1-10 down, then I would focus on 11-20. This is definately where songs would come into play. Also, singing the abc's and identifying colors. Colors you could do with every child. Put a box for every color by the toy box. Yellow box = yellow toys, blue box = blue toys. You could make up a song when the children are putting away toys like "clean up, clean up, the yellow toys go in the yellow box, the blue toys go in the blue box, pick up, pick up". Kids love to sing and they'll pick up on things 10x's faster! Contact your local schools that you know the children will be attending for kindergarten and ask them about what the children will be screened for at kindergarten round up. My school has the children count to 20 and we also let them count to whatever they can count to. Then we have the children do very simple math. like, here are 10 bears. Can you take 3 away and tell me how many are left? Then we also like them to identify colors . Also, little questions like which one is bigger? Definately see what they'll be required to know. If you are teaching them, I would ask for the parents to work with them also. That way you won't feel like you're working toward nothing. For reading, go to www.starfall.com. It has alot of easy beginning to read stuff like abc's and letter id.

It's not really your responsibity to teach them if you are not a licenced pre-school or a licenced teacher. The best thing I suggest is have storytime and read aloud to them, play educational games with kids over 2 etc. Children under 2 are not ready for ABC's and structured learning anyway.

Are you talking about teaching them what the numbers, letters, etc look like? I'm sure you're probably just talking about teaching them to count and stuff like that which I don't think would be too difficult to do even if the ages range from 1-3. Here are some things I think might be helpful in teaching them if you wanna try them out...hope this helped!

Do you know how we hold scissors? How do we carry the scissors? What can we use scissors for? What would you like to cut out? What do the scissors feel like? How do they feel? Why do we have to be careful with scissors? What does mummy/daddy etc use scissors for at home? Can you think of anyone who uses scissors at work? I take it that was the kind of thing you were after?
