i cook homemade from scratch. my friends don't (or at least as much as i do) for the following reasons:
1) time
*they work more hours than i do
2) family schedules
*there kids might be in things that are scheduled during the week making them have to eat more on the run
3) poor planning
*planning your meals out BEFORE u shop would keep them from having to go to the store twice a week (which is another excuse not to cook). also cook a few meals while twice a week
(since u have to be in the kitchen anyway) would cut back on that problem, but these are 'suggestions' that they don't get.
4) fear of cooking
*they think because they don't know how to cook it they shouldn't try.
5) my friend cooks (ME), so we can just go over her house
*bunch of bull crap!!!! that's just lazy.
6) my generation grew up on the microwave
*this is a problem. parents just dont have their kids in the kitchen like they use to. learning to cooks begins in your youth, that way u wont fear failure when you're 20, 30, 40 trying to learn for the first time to cook because now u have a family.

Certainly, some American women cook meals daily for their families. However, some of these women are single moms and haven't the time to cook only microwave. We have some families where the husband does all the cooking. Then we have women who just simply don't know how to cook and need lessons or cannot understand the recipe/instructions in a cookbook, and are afraid to ask for help. They fear someone may laugh at them. I could go on and on with many reasons. Now tell me, do you cook?

Oh my. Well that just set the women's movement back a few decades! Why are you only asking why American WOMEN don't cook home-made meals for their families? What about American men? American women, AS WELL AS American men, have JOBS these days. Both should cook for their families.
Shame on some of you for perpetuating stereotypes that women belong in the kitchen!! I didn't go to graduate school and work my as* off to cook for someone for free!

For one most American women work as so does the husband, sometimes there is not enough time for the working mom to make a great homemade cook meal, so going to dinner to a resturant is fine, and why is it that you just have American women, why not another specific country's women. Why must it also be American women, not every working mom, has time to prepare a nice home cooked meal and have it on the table, so back up off the the American women.

It's not priority.
Some do. Not as many as they used to though. I cook a homemade meal for my family almost every night. The only time I don't is if we have enough left overs for a second meal. On the weekends I cook all three meals. What about you?

I always cook my husband a good meal. I am a stay at home mom and since he's out working all day to put a roof over our heads the least I can do is keep the house clean and keep him well fed and happy...
But to answer your question I think that since it became common place for wife's to have full time jobs and all I think they let that part of "being a wife" slide a bit.... also, I think a lot of people are just plain lazy

I must say that I find this question both amusing and offensive. I do not buy the garbage that "women now have careers" or "they don't have time" or any other such inane excuses. Women AND men who don't cook are merely too lazy and ignorant. And it isn't just Americans. I have a full time career and cook all the time. My mother had a career and cooked all the time. Needless to say both my brother and myself were taught to cook at a young age and we are both excellent cooks. In addition, he and I do the majority of the cooking in both of our households. Cooking is a labor of love.

I cook for my family. Not in the microwave. I think mothers are so busy these days cooking from scratch has fallen to the wayside. It used to be taught mother to daughter and there was no other way to eat than what mom cooked. Times have changed.
