I know what you mean...saying "thank you" seems weird since they are not complimenting YOUR looks but his... try along with thank you saying "we think so too... " or " Yes we are very proud." or "thank you for saying so.."

I don't think that people always expect you to answer, If I talk to a baby, its enough for me that the mother smiles at me, letting me know that she doesn't mind, or you just can turn it into a joke like "O he looks like butter wouldn't melt in his mouth but you should hear him in the middle of the night when he screams hes head off", or something like that, it doesn't really matter what you say, as long as you happy with it and give a smile...

Thank you is still the best response. The person who is complimenting should know the child can't respond properly.

Your response is appropriate, but there may be times when it seems awkward. You can still respond to them if they say, "Oh, you're so cute!" as long as they stop there. If they have their face up to him and keep on going, you don't have to reply. Base your response on the situation... and congrats on your cute baby!!

Just have fun with the moment, make some baby-talk response on behalf of the baby, like 'ooh, baby says thank you...', etc.
Enjoy every moment of your time with the baby as he's growing up, don't get held back by these things...

if they saying it to you, a "thank you" is always nice. But if they say it directly to the baby then maybe you can smile it off.

If they are talking directly to your son, eventhough he cannot answer you are not obligated to respond back.

Haha I would get this all the time when my twins were babies. I would just say something along the lines of "well, if he/she could talk I am sure they would say thanks"
