longhornkjm,
Those responses on Yahoo! Answers are people who would never have the courage to act like that to your face. I have witnessed door-to-door, and I have preached with a PA system in the street, and I have rarely run into the type of responses that you often see here. The anonymity produces courage on both sides. Many Christians don’t have the courage to openly express their faith publicly either.
Please forget the idea that this forum represents real people. Many of the very vocal people are cowards similar to the men who beat up women behind closed doors but are mousy in public. Ignore them, and ask your questions, and enjoy the Christian and open minded non-Christian answers from others that you seek.
God bless.

This thread isn't exclusively about religion. It's also about spirituality. This is not an exclusive club. Religion and spirituality can also include those with a LACK OF religion or spirituality.
Besides, without some kind of balance, all of you would be in your coffee clutch with no differing points of view, and not using your free will to think for yourselves.
Participation in these threads means that you agree to the Constitutional Rights of other participants, too - regardless of religious affiliation (or not).
In this forum, everyone's voice can be heard. These are discussions and philosophical debates about religion and spirituality, NOT SERMONS. Go to church or hold a bible-thumping session in your home and stay there if that's what you're looking for.
Maturity and respect is a two-way street. You would have others respect your beliefs and not give it in return because religious zealots demand that the dogma which has been shoved down there throats be "shared" with the world. Others would simply have you respect their intelligence and lack of belief.
Personally, I don't believe many of these responses (some of which even I have made) are rooted in hatred. It's more the result of the overwhelming understanding that religious dogma becomes a wall for you to hide behind rather than open discussion and debate. Bible quotes and verses are thrown around in response to anyone who asks a question, without any thought as to their meaning - and how much it just sounds like babble to someone who is not schooled in being churchy.
Perhaps next time you go into an answer you'll keep that in mind. Observe how righteous, pius, and radical the posts from "christians" are and understand the responses they illicit. Understand that most responses aren't responses at all. It's all just regurjitate dogma that's privvy only to those who are initiated.
Far too often religion is presented as a barrier in the guise of enlightenment. The " 'cause God said so" response doesn't cut it for those who want a real, intelligent, open discussion about any given subject.
Lastly, some of the "hateful" responses are from people who have 'survived' religious indoctrination and who have taken their own path in life, away from religion. Those who admit so are often cast as evil, or have their souls "prayed for". They don't want your pity, your prayers, or your self-indulgent acts of forgiveness. They merely want to be accepted.
Christian! Humble thyself!

Organized religions are a form of manipulation and control. Plus religions are very cultural. Take any American Christian raise them in a non-Christian culture and they would be just as fanatical about that particular religion. Now to be spiritual, and to believe in a higher power and some form of intelligent design is reasonable and is totally a horse of another color than being "religious". The reason people can't distinguish between the two is what amazes me!

You post a question on a site that has nothing to do with religion and you are suprised at the answers you get? If you are looking for pure religious drivel, go to gojesus.com.
Also, most religious questions posted on here are posted in a manner that implies the stupidity of those that don't believe, and with an arrogance, (eg I will pray for your lost soul,) that is disgusting.
For good examples of that arrogance, see ayashmoya's and tom's answer. And tom, come to my door if you would like to see some of that hostility you say I won't do to your face.

i dislike--yes, even hate--organized religion for a few reasons. and none of them are because i have nothing better to do. religion has been used for hundreds of years to control and oppress people. don't believe me? look at the crusades, the inquisition and radical islamists. how about the catholic missionaries who will provide poor people in third world countries with rice and clothes, but not contraception so they can stop having these kids they can't afford to feed in the first place? look at muslim women being beaten to death for showing their ankles in public, or even walking through town without a male escort. a person's relationship with their god is a private and personal matter, but a lot of people like to shove it in the faces of others, telling one that one is wrong, or going to hell if one don't believe the way that they think one should. how could anyone not hate that? as far as "discussing religious matters", i find that most people don't want to "discuss" anything`, they just want to sit around typing "jesus is great" and when you ask them why, they respond with scripture or other rhetoric, but no real answers.

Each of us has our own "agenda," but many have no self-discipline and cannot control their sarcasm and hatred. They create a challenge for all of us to work on our own self-discipline and respect for all others. Consider each of the hateful responses as a "test" of your own self control.
What a great forum this could be if we were all looking to learn from each other and had the utmost respect for others' beliefs!!
Maybe it's a matter of who will get bored first -- those looking for serious debates or those who only participate for the shock value.

I think it is important to be understanding to both sides of this issue. On the one side, you are hurt and offended that people are "hating" on your religion. In reality, they are expressing their distrust for religion. On the side of the "haters" they are eager to bash the religiously "pious" because they seem to have "no intelligence." In actuality, they have enough intelligence to know that you need some faith in order to survive this crazy world. Personally, i think that the idea of organized religion is an old and outdated one, and should evolve to survive. There is no need for demanding beliefs in either direction. It's better to have your own ideas about God and morality, as long as they coincide with the law (no sacrificing virgins, please). There's also no need to try to convince any one that you right and someone else is wrong, on either side. That's futile and only results in anger. Instead, try just owning your ideals and upholding them. Don't try to impose them, whatever they may be.

When you question soneones beliefs you open a personal attack on the core of their existence. That is why so many people feel what they believe is right because if it wasnt then they would be wrong.
Religion, to me anyways, is a system of ideas put forth to try and live by. If that "idea" doesnt work it is pretty easy to modify. Conversely, Religion is based on beliefs and that belief is what is extremely hard to change.

I've never had an atheist ring my doorbell at 0800 on a nice, calm, Sunday morning and then try to screw up my day with their thoughts and feelings.
I guess that makes the atheists less rude and obnoxious then the "religious" people out there.
So, like slamming your front door on a holy-joe trying to cram their religion down your throat, you can just skip-over the anti-religious comments with a sweep of your mouse.

Dear dear Child, of course you're going to run into those people who want everything to be from their POV. Religion is a very serious thing to many, including the atheists to whom there is no God. It's all POV. We have to allow them that or we're being no better than those you say you want to go away. Pagans, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists etc...they all have a different view of God. There's not just one mold for the Divine to fit in to. Be tolerant and forgiving.
