I'm told that it does both. It's a drug, and folks say they enjoy it. They say it

Picks them up
Settles them down
They can take a break from work
They feel the smoke hit the back of their throat.
Curbs their appetite.
Races their heart.

And a bunch of other stuff. But in the end, - it's a no-win situation, so don't even start or try.

Most adults started smoking when they were teenagers. It was supposed to be cool to smoke. When it became known just how bad smoking is for you, a lot of people either did not start smoking or quit if they already were. I know nicotine is one substance that is addictive but studies have shown that either more of this or another agent altogether is put into the cigarettes to make it harder to quit (it's highly addictive physically). Some people claim in gives them energy. Often people will need a cigarette in the morning to wake up. Others like my husband find when they're under a lot of stress that they need a cigarette. I don't know if this is actually true or not because it seems he constantly needs a cigarette. And it's not always at times when the pressure is on.

i think people continue to smoke knowing that it is bad for them because they do not think they smoke that often. Also, some people have no other outlet to stress and/or anger, and feel that by taking a 15 minutes break to smoke, they will be able to not think about anything for a bit, which will allow them to rethink their situation/problem. Some people also smoke b/c they think that nothing would ever happen to them. Most people stop smoking when they notice changes in their body, or side effects, such as stained teeth, the lose of friends (since they begin to stink, and also leads to mood swings, etc.) coughing blood, weak immune system, etc.

It does relax you when you are stressed out, but it is an awful habit. It doesn't give you any energy. If anything, it makes you sleepy. It is also said that it curves your appetite, and that is why when people quit, they gain weight. Don't ever start because it is so hard to quit, and there is nothing special enough about smoking to make you want to. Trust me. I have been smoking for 14 years. I want to quit and I will someday soon.

Tobacco is addicting. Once you become addicted to smoking or the use of tobacco, you feel like you need to have a smoke just to relax. A lot of people who smoke cannot quit without help, unless they go "Cold Turkey" It is addicting and something no one should try.

Main reasons adults smoke when it's known to be so bad-ADDICTION.And yes when someone is under a lot of stress it can be relaxing. Some dont want to quit because they are afraid of gaining weight, replacing cigarrettes with food to occupy their hands. Some people figure that we are all going to die sometime and you might as well enjoy yourself til the end.Definately does not give energy! If anything it makes physical activity harder because your lungs become weaker than someone who doesnt smoke. And last but not least, stubborness&just plain stupidity!

Smoking calms the addiction... and "feels good"...

Sure it leads to a RELAXED STATE. Never seen it GIVE energy... except it allows the addict to "move on" to the next task... by temporarily removing the monkey from their back.

I ask myself the same question every time I purchase five packets of my pipe tobacco. I hand them £40 ($65) and they hand me the five packets - each one clearly marked in large letters 'SMOKING KILLS' 'SMOKING EFFECTS SEXUAL PERFORMANCE'.................... and yet I continue to smoke - not because it gives energy (because it does not), relax - maybe.
