It sounds like he is allergic to cats. I'd recommend taking him to an allergy specialist, especially if it happened that quickly. Benadryl will help ease the symptoms if it is allergy related. It's best to see a doctor who specializes in allergies and asthma; not one who does allergies on the side (like an ears, nose, and throat doctor). A doctor who specializes in allergies will know better what to test for. It would also be a good idea to have him checked for allergies to molds, pollens, and dogs in addition to just checking for cat allergies. If he is highly allergic to something, the doctor may suggest the he carries an epi-pen for emergencies. Till then, I'd keep him away from the cats (an exception would be hairless cats) and be careful of how he reacts around other animals such as dogs. If he is allergic to cats, he can get allergy shots to build up his immunity to cats and one day should be able to hold cats like most other people without an allergic reaction.
Also, if the kittens had watery eyes, there is a chance that he could have caught something from the cats such as pink eye or an eye infection. Then again it could be as simple as a piece of cat hair getting stuck in his eye.
Go to an allergy specialist first, a pediatrician or family doctor will probably recommend to take him to one anyhow, makes for 1 less doctor visit.

Several family members have the same problem. We simply thoroughly wash hands and then splash cool water on the eye area and or place a cool, wet washcloth over the eyes. The child obviously has an allergic reaction to the kitten - when the kitten or mother cat licks the kitten's fur, they deposit protein from their saliva which can cause an allergic reaction in some people.

I would say that your grandson has had an allergic reaction to the pet dander. The best thing to do is bring him to the doctor and get some meds (probably something like Claritin or Zyrtec). And definitely keep him away from cats.

Sounds like he has pretty severe allergies to cats. Poor kid. I suggest you send him back for reprogramming. JUST KIDDING. Seriously, give him an antihistamine and keep him away from the cats. These kinds of severe allergies can cause such swelling in the mucus glands that the throat and airway can close leading to difficulty breathing or worse, suffocation.

He's probably allergic. Take him to the doctor for allergy testing. Sometimes, if you keep them away from cats for a while (couple of years or so), the allergy will go away. My brother is allergic and we had to get rid of my cat. Very annoying.

Benadryl immediately. He's allergic. Don't let him hold them anymore, it could make him have a hard time breathing, and his symptoms may even be worse next time. And you will want to bring this up to his doctor to see what he says.
