A few breeds of dogs do seem to smile a friendly smile - Dalmatians and Border Collies do it. It's a modified version of the very unfriendly snarl, where the dog bares his teeth to warn you away. When a dog is smiling, he'll crouch down a bit with his ears back and show a crooked smile with his head on an angle. If he bites you right after that? You know he wasn't smiling!

My dog also seem to smile sometimes. Maybe that's a coincidence, maybe she's actually happy! And because it smiles at random moments doesn't mean it smiles for no reason, maybe he's thinking about something funny.
