I have fallen in love with a particular dog breed which is very rare and puppies from ethical breeders are generally $1800-2000 in the US. It is called an Entlebucher Sennenhund. The breed characteristics, size, and temperament are perfect for us. Is this really dumb?? I don't know what to do...

I am one who, from exprience, would recommend to go to the shelter, and adopt a dog. Where I live, there is a shelter, willing to GIVE-Away, Healthy dogs and cats, because they are so over crowded, and need to find homes, they have already begun Euthanizing and cannot stay open any longer because they do not have they money to remai open.Good luck, and buy the way, I am taking 2 more dogs (considered unadoptable, and a snake) ON top of our other 6 dogs, there are pleanty that need to be rescued. An no, am am not one of those psycho advocates, I just have purchased dogs before, and I know your situation, and more often then not, the shelter dogs are healthier then purebreeds, if you need help or have questions, e-mail me... Good Luck

If you've done the research, know that the breed is right for you, and found responsible breeders, you've obviously given this a lot of thought already.

The reason that many people like purebreds is because you can predict the temperament and characteristics, etc., which help you determine if the dog will suit your needs. Apparently this one does. Yes, you could go to a shelter and adopt a dog, but if you already have your heart set on the look, attitude, energy level, etc, of this breed, then you won't find what you are looking for at a shelter.

Ethical breeders of rare breeds sell puppies for higher amounts because they have already invested a lot into their breeding program -- importing a rare breed from a responsible breeder in another country is not cheap, nor is the genetic testing involved prior to breeding a litter. If they show in parent club or rare breed/FCI shows in order to prove their dogs' quality, that's even more money invested into the program. If you want a rare breed and want to get it from someone who knows what they are doing, you should expect to pay more -- and you should also expect to get what you pay for.

You are investing in a companion that will bring happiness to your life. If the breeder is ethical and the litter healthy, the dog will live a full, wonderful life with you.

If this is what you want, I'd say you aren't dumb. People spend lots of money on stupid things all of the time -- I don't count the love of another living creature among those things. But that's just my opinion.

NO! breeders breed dog's for the love of the breed. I've paid $2000.00 for one of my American Bull Dogs and $1000.00 for my other one i dont' see anything wrong with paying good money if your getting what you want. If all you want is just a dog and you dont' care what it is then go to the pound. But if your looking for something specific and you settle for less you might regret it later. Most puppy's the come from breeders come with health guarantee's and as well as papers. Talk to many breeders before you plan on getting a pup from them and if their good breeders expect to talk to them for at least half an hour...they will drill you with questions to make sure that their puppy's go to a good home.

Personally I would not spend that kind of money on a dog, no matter what kind it is. This is a breed that I am not familiar with.

You should see some of the prices that some so called breeds ask for on Chihuahua puppies. I have seen them listed for almost $15,000. Now that is CRAZY!!! I love Chihuahuas, but who in their right mind would pay that much for any dog?!

"Crazy" is relative. Spending hour after hour anwsering these questions may be considered "crazy" by many people! Shelter dogs are an option, but if you really want that breed, I don't think it is crazy. We raise rabbits and many people say that paying $100 for a rabbit is ... beyond crazy....but we do it for showing and improving the breed. If people only bought from reputable breeders and we stopped irresponsible people from breeding their pets and dumping them in shelters, we would be much better off.

If you love the dog and can afford it, go ahead. When you figure that the average dog lives 12 years, then it's really not a lot of money to have what you want. Hey, some people pay $100,000 for a car!

If you have the money to blow on a dog then go ahead. Personally I would rather take a cruise to Europe and get a loyal mutt at the pound. You are the one that worked for the money.

Yep, crazy. Spend $100 on a dog and give the rest to charity.

Yes, I think it is nuts. Especially when there's so many pets in shelters that need homes. Have you considered a rescue society? They are often breed-specific.

You can find the same things in many shelter dogs too.
