i had a rat terrier that LOVED being outside. he slept inside at night ... but played outside all day long. he loved to run down to the gate when someone left the house (he would "race" the cars) and believe me, the little guys are super fast. he also loved chasing the cattle we had on our land. they have great personalities and are fearless little dogs. highly recommended.

Yes and no. They have short hair, so they can't live outside in the winter without a heated dog house. Dogs are very social animals - if you only have one, he will probably bark and howl his lonely little heart out. If you have two terriers, they may fight and tear each other up. Terriers will dig huge holes - sometimes under your fence - and run away. I don't really understand why someone would get a dog and then never spend time with it.

I have a Rat terrier Corgi. He is a good apartment dog. He does need to get out a couple of times a day for a long walk and to play fetch. One thing I learned when I got the dog and started reading about terriers is they love to dig (terra; terriers) so they sometimes dig their way out of fenced yardes if left alone too long. My particular dog hates storms especially thunder storms and freaks out during those, but other than that is fine to let hang out out side if I can watch him. Terriers are working dogs. They were bred to hunt rats.

My boss has a rat terrier and hates him. Only keeps it cause his kids love it. He says it chews up everything. It is an outside dog during the day and sleeps in at night. When it is cold the dog goes in the garage in the day while they are at school & work.

Depends on your climate.. If it gets very cold where you live, i'd be careful leaving them outside.. If it gets very hot, please make sure you have an area for shade/shelter and plenty of cool water available... Also keep an eye out for the types of predators you have in your area.. Rat terriers are very small, so large birds of prey and wild animals find them a nice treat... Even if on a leash or fenced in area. All in all, I would consider them a house pet!

Rat terriers are magnificent! they are loving, dependable, an incredible canine for a kinfolk, get alongside properly with the different breed i've got ever presented them to (i've got had a pair), and are purely in many circumstances very candy. Now for the negatives: in case you have on no account had a canine, a rat terrier will possibly no longer be the proper first canine. They (as all and sundry else has pronounced) are very lively. They like to play tug-of-conflict, and whilst they arise with some thing to play with they shake all of it around like a limp doll. it particularly is easily very lovable, yet no longer in case you have a hampster or gerbil... i've got on no account had any problems with socialization, yet it particularly is with the help of the fact i decide on my canines very heavily. in case you circulate to a breeder or to an animal rescue...take a seat in a super room with numerous of the terriers and forget approximately approximately them. those that come as much as you in the present day and insist interest - no longer a solid decision (aggressive and annoying - i.e. DIVA). you besides mght do no longer choose those that cling back the longest because of the fact they are shy and could no longer alter properly on your place and/or yet another canine. the middle one or ones are those that are proper. they have purely adequate interest to be exciting. solid success.

Depends on your climate, if it gets very cold you will have to bring it in, most of them are short haired dogs.
