So what happens to all the food that is not 'Best quality' is it thrown away? This seems a real waste when most of the world is starving.

Very intersting question, to be honest i hadn't really thought about it until now. I think all food has to be a certain quality and standard to be in the supermarkets. i think what it actually is that different people sell the same products at the same standard but at different prices.

Many supermarkets use three grades of food (for fresh food). Grade 1 is the top grade - perfect (but you rarely get Grade 1 fruit & veg). Grade 2 is what most fruit and veg falls into and is the stuff you find on the shelves. They also have a grade below grade 2 that is still sold to the customer - this would be the economy or value stuff that you can buy (still talking about fresh food). There's nothing wrong with it but the individual items might not fall into the correct size or shape bracket.

2nd quality food probably goes to make animal food (dog or cat food). I recall some friends in college buying "USDA Choice" cuts of beef. Later that night they snuck around campus and went to the cafeteria, and saw these huge boxes of chicken breast (about the size of a household refrigerator) and on the side it said, "Chicken Breast" and below that it said, "Suitable for human consumption". That might have been the 2nd quality you speak of. Yuk.

That is funny because you know it is an advertising gimmick. However I was told that Dunkin Donuts sells their reject coffee beans to WaWa...This is why Dunkin Donuts coffee is so much better than that mud water WaWa serves.
