Yom Kippur is the Jewish day of Atonement. It occurs 10 days after the Jewish New Year, which is called Rosh HaShana.

Jews believe that on Rosh HaShana, God judges everyone and writes down in his book what will happen to each person during the next year. This day starts off the "Ten Days of Atonement", during which Jews pray, repent, and give charity -- three actions which are supposed to cancel out any harsh punishments that God wrote down for them.

On Yom Kippur, Jews fast from water and food, and do not wear leather, wash, anoint themselves or have conjugal relations. The also wear white to symbolize purity of the soul. Synagogue services are extremely long that day.
Jews believe that at the end of Yom Kippur, God closes his judgment book and seals it. This is the last chance to repent this year.

After Yom Kippur is over, Jews break their fast and immediately start preparing for the next holiday: Succoth. There is ALWAYS another Jewish holiday coming round the bend...

Yeah, Yom Kippur is a Chinese holiday. The day of celebration is on May 5th. Some call it Cinco de Mayo. That is the day the Chinese eat goats penis and dogs. Cats sometimes but only in a broth soup. I hope this is helpful for you. Oh, Chinese like to eat monkey toes too, but they are hard to come by, do you know where I can get some?

Yom Kippur is the Jewish day of repentance, considered to be the holiest and most solemn day of the year. Its central theme is atonement and reconciliation. Eating, drinking, washing, cosmetics, wearing leather shoes, and conjugal relations are prohibited. Fasting - total abstention from all food and drink - usually begins a half an hour before sundown, and ends after nightfall the following day.

Contrary to popular belief, Yom Kippur is not a sad day. Sephardic Jews (Jews of Spanish, Portuguese and North African descent) refer to this holiday as "the White Fast". Consequently, many Jews have the custom of wearing only white clothing on this day, to symbolize their "white" purity from sin, akin to angels
