It's new, new things are scary to pups. Take the time to go in with him the first couple times. Make sure there is a dog bed, and a favorite toy in there. You want the dog house to be enticing for him. Give him lots of praise when he goes in himself, and most important....be patient!

How big is your puppy and how big is your doghouse? Did you buy it new or from a garage sale? Dogs are wierd. They won't sleep where other dogs have been. I have two beagles and we have two identical dog houses in their pens, but Remington will only sleep in the front one and Brandy will only sleep in the back one. The doghouse might be too big for him. Tips: try putting some of the puppy's favorite toys in the house along with a warm towel and maybe an alarm clock. This simulates the heartbeat of the mother dog. Give that a try.

Does your puppy have a favorite toy?? If so, try putting the toy in the doghouse. If not, does he sleep on a blanket or some type of dog bed?? If so, then try putting one of them in there and he might get used to it. But it has to be someting that the dog already has and likes and is used to. Getting a puppy used to something that it has never seen before sometimes can be hard, but just hang in there, it just take time!!

Dogs, by nature, are "den animals" and your puppy will eventually see this new doghouse as his own. To help him get curious about it, sit next to the doghouse and play with him. This will help him identify it as harmless and a good place because you are there. Eventually, put a favorite toy and a blanket he's slept on inside the house and ease him into it. Dogs can be stubborn, so don't force him in. Let it be on his own terms and he will make it his own!

Because it's new.
Let him lay on a towel or blanket you've wrapped around yourself - so it smells familiar - and place that in the doghouse.
If it's big enough for you to fit in there - try squeezing in there with him.
If not, don't coddle him for being afraid - you'll just reinforce the fear. But don't force him in there if he's terrified, either.
One of the best things you can do to encourage him to walk in on his own is to show him a treat. Let him smell it (but don't give it to him). Place it near the entrance of his doghouse, and praise him for coming close.
Repeat this, moving the treat further back. Heap on the praise when he goes in on his own. Good luck!

Wrap an old blanket or towel around yourself for a few minutes, and then put it in the doghouse with a treat.

Because this is a puppy and the house is new (strange) to him. Try putting some of his favorite toys, blankets, and a few treats in the dog house. If it has his smell in it, then he will start to check it out.

Sometimes if the puppy was held in a cage, he might think that you are going to cage him up. Bad experience with cages. I would recommend that you get an alarm clock that ticks. You know the ones with the bells on top. Set it in there with him/her. Sounds like the mothers heart. Very Soothing.

My dog used to be scared of his dog house when he was a pup, don't know why, but eventually he got over it and now six years later, has no problem going in his house.

Cause it's scary and new. The place he loves is where his people are, do you blame him? Maybe if you go in the little house with him, he won't be so afraid. Make it all soft and cozy inside, that could help.
