Okay, even though people have already answered well enough, their are a few things that need to be clarified. Some of the enlisted ranks are the same pay grade i.e. E-8= MSG and 1SG. The difference is that a 1SG leads troops (normally a company) while a MSG does not. The same goes for SPC and CPL. THey are both E-4's but the CPL is in a leadership position. Ditto for E-9's. Command Segeant Majors lead battalions, while Sergeant Majors do not, and there is only one Command Sergeant Major of the Army and he still gets paid as an E-9. ANd on the officer side, there can only be one 5-star (see General of the Army) and only in a time of War.
