I have a 6wk old kitten. I tried giving her soft food with hard food next to it, she would eat the soft food but not touch the hard food. so i mixed it, and now she eats it all. Is it ok to keep mixing her food like this even when she gets older? If not what age should i take her off of the soft food?

That's a great way to start getting her to eat the crunchy food. (Which is much better for her teeth) I kept increasing the amount of dry food I would feed my kittens until they were pretty much only eating fry food. You could feed her the mixed food once in the morning and once in the afternoon, then leave dry food out for her overnight and see how that works. As long as it's good quality food and she's gaining weight, you're doing well. Good luck with the new kitty!

Yes it is ok to mix the food, as long as the kitten eats it. I have two cats and I sometimes still mix their food. The best way to wean them off of the mixture is slowly decrease the amount of soft food mixed in with the hard food until the kitten will only eat the hard food. But there is always the chance that the kitten will not like hard food at all and will only eat a mixture or only soft food. Good luck from one cat lover to another!!!!

6 weeks old is incredibly young. Technically she should still be nursing on her mother. The earliest you can remove a cat from it's mother is 8 weeks, but it's preferred they be with their mothers for a full 12 weeks. It's way too soon for your kitten to be on hard food. They still have their kitten teeth! I suggest you feed only wet food until the kitten is 4 months old and then you can introduce the kibble. Use a kitten food though where the pellets are smaller and easier for the kitten to eat. In the meantime, for the next few weeks, you should consider bottle feeding your kitty. Get some KMR (Kitten Milk Replacer) from the pet store. It comes in a powder that you mix with water or in liquid form. Also get a kitten bottle and bottle feed your kitten for at least another 2 weeks. You are now her surrogate mama and kittens need to nurse. Consider it a great opportunity to bond with your new kitten. Good luck.

Sure! It sounds as if you are a special owner, to be concerned over her food :) Keep mixing the wet with some crunchy kitten chow, and you can decrease the amount of wet over the next few weeks if you want. We always gave our cats dry to munch on all day, and just one teaspoon (literally) of canned food a day. they thought they were getting a real treat! Good luck on your new pet!

This is really the best way if you are gonna feed her soft cat food.... If I were you though, I would eventually take her off of soft cat food all together... Just do it gradually. I did this and it is so much better... If you have a litter box inside the home you will know why... And if you even want to and you have access to your garage from your home, put the box in there instead of the house... It is easy to train them to use it there.... And it is much better to have it out of the house..... I have trained mine to do this and they even though it is 3am, let me know when they need out there........

I think it is safe to mix them. Just be sure not to overfeed with soft food or you'll find yourself with a pudgy kitty. It's actually better to serve mixed than just soft because the hard food helps to clean their teeth.

It's ok but move to all hard food gradually if you can. Canned food is higher in fat and obesity is a common health problem in cats. Plus it will cut down on gas! :)
