when it get hot and you cut it off it will not start back up

i think it might be a ground problem or just simply your starter

Need more info. Does it turn over at all? If not, this is typical for a failed starter. It first exhibits problems when it is hot.

If it does turn over, think basics... Air, Fuel, Spark. Most likely it did not all of a sudden lose air. The vapor lock is really only prevalent if it sits for a while, but possible.

fuel pump relay. When you turn the car on it supplies power as it heats up it loses contact. After it cools again the car will start again. Seen it happen often on VW cars.

I am surprised 85 VW still working????
Something is wrong with it, return it to VW.
This is not how they make cars, usually their cars do not last more than 8 yrs.

it is called vaporlock, and with a car that age, it may be pretty hard to fix.
