A free puppy is one of the most expensive things you'll ever own. If "free" is the only kind of puppy you can afford, don't get one. They're easy to find. People advertise them in the paper all the time, and your local vet may know of some, as well. But please remember what you have to look forward to:
15 or more years of feeding. The dog will be hungry every day, whether you have any money or not. You need to keep chew toys on hand at all times so the dog doesn't eat your shoes and furniture. About $8 for a bag of rawhide that will last a week if you've got a big chewer. You have to get annual shots. About $100 Spay/neutering. About $250. Most states require licensing. I live in Omaha, NE, and it is only $18 for a neutered dog, but it is more in other places. Annual heartworm check and preventative and flea preventative. About $100. And then there are the unexpected veterinary expenses. My last dog did not reach his sixth birthday because he got cancer. During his short but very love-filled life, he cost me close to $7,000, not including shots and food. He stepped on a piece of glass and had to have stitches in his paw pad, he had a tooth go bad, he had allergies, he got bitten by a brown recluse, and then he got cancer and had radiation treatments. Those things were certainly not expected, nor were they in the budget.
If you have the sort of budget that won't accommodate these kinds of surprises, think about whether a dog is a good idea.
Please consider whether you can really afford a dog before you get one. Don't be one of those people who gets a puppy and then in six months you're posting questions like "my dog is lethargic and seems to be in pain but I don't have any money for the vet, what should I do". Those people are idiots. Don't be an idiot.
If, after reading this, you find that you want to be around dogs but can't afford to properly care for one, consider volunteering at your local shelter.

Free puppies are good, but alot of the time, they come from people who didn't care about them when they were young. They might have health problems or distateful temperments. It's worth your money to get your dog from a shelter or reputable breeder where you know the dog's been cared for in the right way.

Go to a convenient store. They should have something called Trading Post or Trading...something. People call in and post ads trying to buy things but mostly to sell or give away things. There is a section for animals. Most of the ads that are giving away pets say "Free to a good Home". Try that.

Your local humane society . You get the gift of a puppy, and the puppy gets the gift of life. Sometimes there is a small fee, but usually there is a voucher which covers most of that when you have your pup vet checked,spayed/neutered,etc.

gee there are 5 half mutt half rotts next door to me and the momma too, some jerk left her and my neighbors and i have been caring for her and the babies, but sriously you didnt say where you live, so my suggestion is to go to the animal shelter in your area and adopt an animal, most shelters have a deal where you pay like 50-60 bucks and you get the dog/cat and all its shots for a year plus they will spay/neuter it for free and this helps control the pet population...good luck with your new best friend...

Try going on www.petfinder.org - you can put in your zip code and it'll come back w/a bunch of shelters/organizations in your area - I don't know if they will be free (there's usually an adoption fee) but it's a good place to start.
