Moms love it when you can make something out of a favorite picture of yourself or of the two of you. If there are other children a collage of pics or even a collage of pics of you cut out your haed only on some, whole body with head and glue them sideways, upside down, goofy faced...have fun. Frame it up and she'll love it.
For dad, a self painted BBQ apron with fabric paints ..use your hand prints, foot prints, the dogs feet, cats what ever, imagination is the key. Gifts from the heart are always a hit, you can't miss if it's made with love. Also visit Martha Stewart.com or ask.com...good luck!!

I was the same way when I was younger! Every birthday, I would write a funny story about my mom that I remembered from my childhood. She would let everyone in the family read it, she was so delighted! When my grandmother was alive, I also wrote her a letter, thanking her for my mother's life and for raising such a wonderful person as my mom! Then, on my own birthday, I wrote my mom a letter and sent her flowers, thanking her for MY life. That always brings a tear! ;)
I once did a hand print (my own) on a card with finger paint ... and wrote "thanks for always being the hand that guides my way ... without you I'd be lost." This idea would also make a great Father's Day gift.
or make them both a friendship bracelet and tell them thanks for being your best friend, through good and bad times, you know they're always there for you.
Good luck!

Write your Mom a really nice poem about what she means to you or a story from your past that has something to do with your Mom "being there" for you. Perhaps you could purchase a frame to put the poem in and she could hang it in her room! I'm a Mom and the best gifts in the world really are the ones made by our children. Even cooking her breakfast, spending the day with her, going even for a walk - we love that stuff. We love our kids more than anything else or anyone else in the world. We honestly would give our lives for you guys. To have our children confirm to us that you treasure us too is the ultimate gift.

Go to the dollar store and get a nice big clear vase. Buy some clear little "twinkle" lights on a string (like Xmas lights) and put them inside of the vase. Buy a large batch of potporri in her favorite scent, and pour some of that inside the vase also. Tape the end of the light switch to the outside of the jar; plug it in and you have a nice night light with wonderful fragrance!

Well mother's Day is over so I'll answer for Father's Day. Get him a box of his favorite candy, something including his favorite sport, or a c.d.

A trip to a nice spa
But that's a lot of money .
You could make her a nice flower arrangement if you have access to flowers . She will love it if you make it .
