I work at a vet clinic and deal with euthanasias every day, and I have also had to put animals to sleep myself. The decision of staying with your pet or not is completely up to you. If it would make you feel better to be with your pet in his last moments then by all means do it. If it would make you too sad or upset and you want to remember him as he is now, then don't.
Most clinics, when they put an animal to sleep, will sedate it before giving it the final injection. If your clinic does this, then you also have the option of only being there until they sedate him if you want to. That way the last thing he sees will still be you, but you still don't have to actually watch them give him the final injection.
It is an extremely difficult decision but the best thing is to do what your heart tells you.
I'm very sorry for the loss you will have and please know that I understand exactly what you are going through.

I'm so sorry about your dog. You should try to stay with him, it will be hard, but you should ask for a few minutes alone with him in the room before the vet comes in, to have a quiet good-bye. The actual procedure is quick and you will not regret being there when you look back on it in the future. I don't know if this is something you'd be interested in, but when a friend of mine had her cat put down, the vet offered to shave a bit of her fur and gave it to her. I thought that was sweet.

Absolutely stay with him til he is sleeping. The vet will leave you alone with him if you want. I'm so sorry. These lovely creatures come into our lives and give us so much love never expecting anything in return. It is sad to have to say good bye but it is also inevitable. Grieve a short time then replace your sadness with joy. And let that joy be in the shape of a border collie puppy. There is one out there now waiting to love you.

I am so sorry to hear of what you have to do.
I have sometimes wondered why we put ourselves through things like this by getting pets, but the reason is we love pets, and pets need all the love they can recieve and give us alot of love back.
I would want to be with my dog if i had to put it down. I would want my dog to know that i was there with him in the end.
I realize that this is the hardest thing that you have to do, but the dog loves you and i think wouold want you there.
When people say animals have no feelings i do not believe that for one minute.
It is going to be hard on you no matter what you decide, but if you aren't with him then you may feel worse about not being with him in his last moments of life.
You may regret not being there, but then again you may want to not be there and just remember the good loving days that you had with him, and i am sure you had alot of good memories.
The dogs spirit will forever be with you.
Once again I am so sorry you have to do this, but i imagine he probably is in pain, and one way to think about it is he is not suffering anymore.
May god bless you and I feel for you.
I do suggest you check into other alternatives before you make this final decision, there is so many new medicines and procedures to prevent you maybe from having to do this, check into these first, then decide.

Would you want to leave this world alone? After all the great years of unconditional love he's given you, the least you can do is be with him in his final moments. And yeah, it is the worst. But think of it this way, you are setting him free from his pain to go somewhere where he can run & be free & happy forever. And someday you two will be reunited. I'm very sorry for your loss...unfortunately it is part of life. I have worked in veterinary clinics & shelters for a long time now & this is the one part of the job that none of us who work with animals ever gets used to. it is sad. Try to think of the good times & all the love & joy he brought you over the years then do this one last favor for him & be there for him as he has been for you all these wonderful years.

I don't know that I could stay during the procedure but I can tell you from my experience as a vet tech that your dog won't feel any pain during it, he'll just go to sleep. If you can't stay in the room while it's being done you should go back in after to say goodbye.
I feel for you very much, losing a pet is a very hard thing to go through...

I am so sorry I know that is going to be very hard on you. I had to put 2 of my pets to sleep in the past. One of them was my cat, Sassy who had asthma (yes cats can have asthma). I loved her so much and it still makes me sad to think about it. But I know it had to be done. You just need to remember that you dont want him to live in pain and suffer, that wouldn't be fair to him. I now have a cat who looks a lot like Sassy and I love her very much. It's not the same and I still miss Sassy but I love my new pets just as much.
I'm not sure that I would want to stay with my pet during the procedure - I never did stay with my pets because I was a little bit younger. My mom is the one who took them to get put down and the vet suggested that she didn't watch. It will be a VERY VERY hard thing to watch. I think the best thing to do is let him go and dont watch him suffer.

I had to put one of my dogs down, and it is an awful thing to have to do, I had to carry her in there she was a big German shepard, but I did go in with her to put her up on the table, she just layed there and looked up at me. The Vet should give you the choice to stay or leave, I stayed and I cried like a baby, but I know I was doing the right thing because she was in pain, she had Cancer of the liver. Good Luck! My Sympathy is with you.

I would definetly not stay with him during the procedure, but it depends on how you feel. Do you want to see your dog on his very last moment, or would you prefer to say your goodbyes and remember him that way. The only thing with staying with him is, that will be the last time you see him. Do you really want to have that stuck in your head for the rest of your life? Wouldn't you want your last memory to be with him alive? I guess I wouldn't want to be there, then I would have the image of him that way. Of course, he will be going peacefully, so he won't suffer. Think of it as if it was a family member, would you stay in the room with them?

I'm so sorry to hear that you have to put your collie down.Dealing with something like this is never easy. Right now I have no pets but I did grow up with them. About a year ago my mom had to put down a cat that I grew up with. Everyone reacts differently. She called me up and asked me to take Chelsea (cat's name) to the vet because she couldn't bring herself to do it. So I agreed but when I got to her house I just couldn't do it and had to call my hubby home from work to do it. Which thankfully he understood and did it without a fight. If emotionally you can do it I think you should but if you can't it doesn't make you a bad person because there are alot of us out here that couldn't.....
