Kind of depends on the kind of dinner that you're doing; if you're doing a full Scandanavian smorgasbord, you could have all sorts of things (mmmm... pickled herring, lefse, lutefisk... mmm) However, if the meatballs are the main course of a regular dinner, you'll want something that can help soak up the grease from all that gravy, so something like mashed potatoes or a gratin would work pretty well. Some simple stir-fried vegetables would add a color and texture complement as well (since you've got soft, brown and white stuff on the plate, it'll make it more exciting if you add a little color and crunch to the plate. The other thing that I've done is sautee some brussels sprouts in butter, season with garlic powder, salt and pepper, then sprinkle bread crumbs on top and toss to coat, continuing to cook on medium heat for another couple of minutes until the bread crumbs have soaked up the excess butter and browned slightly.

As for dessert, I'd stick with something traditional, like Swedish rice pudding. Simmer short grain or glutinous rice with about half the water you'd normally use plus sugar to sweeten, and then simmer for several hours while adding cream to keep the liquid level up to the top of the rice. When done, allow to cool, and serve with a raspberry coulis, and whipped cream if you really want to.

Mashed potatoes with brown gravy and mushrooms. For dessert I'll say Cookie Sunday Dessert.

I like to have some egg noodles and mashed potatoes when I make them. I prefer the egg noodles...hubby likes the mashed. I also have either broccoli/cauliflower mix or green bean medley, which is green beans, mushrooms and pearl onions sauteed in garlic and olive oil. For dessert, you wouldn't want anything really heavy because it is a heavy dinner. So I would say strawberry shortcake. :)
