I know there is an appropriate way to dispose of a flag, but my friends and I were debating whether a person would actually be breaking the law by throwing a flag away.

You can take it to any Veteran Service Office, VA Cemetary or VA Hospital, they will dispose of it properly.

There is no law concerning the discarding or destruction of the American Flag. However, there are guidelines on the proper handling of the Flag. Most places like a fire station, police station, VFW, or recruiting station would have more detailed information on the handling of the Flag, not only on proper destruction, but also on displaying with other flags, when to display it, and when it should be placed at half mast and why.

No, because if that was the case there would be a lot of people in trouble, because flags get old, flags are on clothes, and if it's ripped up you can't do anything with it, but get another one like America do with there presidents.

The US Flag Code is a guideline, and not actually enforcable by law. Do whatever you want with the flag.

No, Jenny, there isn't, but as a symbol of not only our country but what it stands for, many people are very protective of that very symbol. however, bearing that in mind, since one of the founding precepts of this great nation of ours is freedom of speech, you can do whatever you like with it despite what many veiw as disrespect towrds the symbol of our great nation. If, however, you find that you must dispose of an American Flag, feel free to mail it (snailmail, of course) to me & I will see to it that it is put to good use as I served my country with distinction & would despair at seeing a flag being direspected in any way that I, myself, found to be lacking proper form & etiquette, okay?

The flag should be burned respectfully with honors if it becomes so badly worn out.

And it should never be allowed to touch the ground
