My boyfriend just had a steel rod and screws put in his right leg a week ago. He feels he is ready to drive saying he can use his left foot to work the gas and brake pedals. Besides being dangerous I want to know what the law says about it. Anybody know or can send me to a web site?

I did it that way when I had my right leg in a cast. It was kind of awkward at first, but worked fine once I got used to it. It's not any more dangerous than using just your right foot for both the gas and brake. Don't know of any laws against it.

It's not illegal to use your left foot to work the brake and gas pedals, but there are safety concerns about using the left foot to work the accelerator (gas). In production models the gas pedal is placed significantly lower off the floor than the brake pedal for safety reasons.
But left foot braking is okay; nearly all circuit racers and all rally racers use the technique as a means of reducing speed, especially on dirt. Your momentum entering a turn/corner is increased dramatically when you're approaching at speed on gravel; on tarmac/asphalt it can be a bit dangerous because the brakes may lock, even with ABS. May I suggest practicing using the left foot braking technique on tarmac first before setting out on public roads; I had to practice for one month doing that technique for my first rallycross race (a half dirt, half tarmac course).

It is not dangerous to use your left foot to gas and brake. As far as I know, the law says that as long as you stop at red lights and maintain the proper speed limit, it doesn't matter what foot you use to gas and brake with. My parents use their left feet to gas and brake all the time and the only accident they were ever in was when they were stopped at a red light and a senile old lady confused the gas pedal with the brake pedal and rear-ended them.

it is crazy and dangerous to use left foot for gas and brake because if you had to stop quick get out of the way your foot could and can get tangled and loose control. some states has a law that you are to use right foot for this purpose. and illegal but can get ticket if caught driving that way . and it is illegal to drive without shoes 50.00 fine if caught in my state. and it is an old time law that was created in the early years and never been enforced or changed since early 1900's

Not illegal, but maybe stupid, If he has no experience. Better to wait to drive, rather than chance having a rod put in his left leg and possibly causing an accident or even death to himself or someone else

Its not illegal at all. Many left-handed people drive that way for comfort. If your bf is normally right-footed, then it will be uncomfortable and dangerous!
