New Guidelines for Catholic Worship from our Pastor, Fr. Joseph Illo
From our Pastor,
Fr. Joseph Illo
From the Pastor's Laptop,

From the Pastor’s Laptop
The Holy Trinity is eternal, but eternally dynamic.
That is, Father-Son-Holy Spirit are perfect and unchanging
in essence, but in continuous exchange of
loving conversation. The Holy Trinity, we might say,
is a family. We can always count on a good family to
“be there,” but there is always something “going on”
in a good family as well.
A parish, too, is a family. The parish of St. Joseph
will “be there” long after all of us are gone, but it is
always changing, growing, developing. Some have
expressed concern over the changes I have made in
my first six-year term as your pastor (which ended
June 1. My second term runs through 2012). While I
am not a perfect leader, I defend my changes thus:
the parish, like a person, develops, and we need to
meet the needs of our developing parish. We cannot
administer the parish in 2006 as we did in 1996.
Programs, priests, and personnel are ever changing,
but the parish remains.
It is with a certain melancholy that I announce the
departure of our Director of Administration, John
Misiak. John came to our staff in 2002 and has
brought us to new levels of administration. He has
manifested an exemplary work ethic, often burning
the midnight oil, and dedicated himself to fiscal and
operational transparency, gaining the trust of our
Finance Committee and parishioners. John’s last day
at the parish will be August 31. We thank him for his
years of service to our parish.
As we bid farewell to John Misiak, we welcome
Wayne Lewis, who will be our Parish Administrator.
Wayne is a native of Modesto, having spent his boyhood
at St. Stanislaus school in the ranks of the altar
boys. His mother, Susan, heads up our Tribunal
Aides program, and his sister, Sally Mears, heads up
our Environmental Justice apostolate. Wayne comes
to us with extensive business experience in Modesto
and the Bay Area, and will begin July 19.
The Mass Explained
A joke: how many Catholics does it take to change a
lightbulb. Answer: none—they use candles. Actually,
we use candles because the Jews used (and use) candles.
Last Sunday was Pentecost, and God the Holy
Spirit deigned to appear to the apostles as Flames of
Fire. I suppose if little flames are good enough for Pentecost,
they are good enough for the rest of the year.
Why doesn’t every church use candles?
