She's finding it stressful all the sudden pressure for the final test. Is it the curriculum that's does this to kids or is it the teaching style? I find it odd that the first half of the year they make things kind've slack and pour on the pressure the last quarter of the year.

I live in Oregon. My daughter is is the third grade. All her testing is behind her. In oregon, the third grade is a bench mark year for state wide testing, so there is more pressure on students, teachers and administrators. I wish it wasn't so. I sometimes feel my children are looked more as test scores than as people.

Third graders take a major test (AIMS) in Arizona. It is toward the end of the school year. The staff gets stressed, the teachers get stressed, the students get stressed. Then all of the talk begins about promotion to the next grade. If you have been an involved parent you should know exactly what grades your daughter will be receiving. High or medium grades? Tell her she has nothing to worry about but to keep doing her best. Low grades? Maybe she needs to take the grade over. Is she a good reader? Many students don't gain much in reading skills after third grade. Much of third grade is for review of or mastering of what was taught in second grade. Teaching style might have some effect but I would say the main focus is your daughter's own self esteem. If she feels good about herself, and has made decent progress, she needn't worry. Turn it around for her and continue to motivate her in her skills. God bless you!

It probably is the teaching style. a good teacher would make the kids understand that their final exam (which, why the h*ll are we making little kids take final exams!?) will just test stuff they learned the rest of the year and there is nothing to worry about. Since the teacher didnt do that, you need to. Tell her she'll do just fine, all she needs to do is eat good meals and get enough rest. She doesn't need any more stress at 8 years old!

Explain to your daughter that it's just a test not a big deal and that whatever her score is will be just fine. Testing and grades are intended to show the teacher how the student is progressing so that the student can get help where help is needed. I always approached testing this way and i never stressed about them and actually enjoyed them for the most part. When we are doing our best it is unreasonable to ask for more isn't it? Let her know this - she'll be fine.

Teachers don't choose the curriculum or the pase; the school board makes those decisions. You should write a letter complaining about the stress on your daughter because they won't change it otherwise. Remember, each letter they receive speaks for the feelings of 100 people (I read that somewhere a few years ago).

Take her out to play a little on the weekends or weekdays help her study make it "fun time" like right after you study a subject move onto something else like crafts or ice-cream take some pressure off of her. soon she'll LOVE the end of the school year because of the fun you spent with her. Also plan activites for summer she'll look forward to it every year have a tradition that you would do every year

my mom is a teacher adn if she had her way there would be no final exams. they are there only to base how well a kid got and understood what the teacher was talking about. my mom says that if a kid has done well all year then there is no need for exams. if a child has done poorly then is is partially the teachers fault. they should have seen that, and corrected there teaching habits for those kids

this may just be that particular teacher's style trying to cram all undone before the end. the final test is pressure enough.

I know what you mean. Those tests are basically trying to see how students learn and what level they are on. It can be stressful at times though.

probably the curriculum, there are things that are required for each grade to learn, the class probably just fell behind, chances are your child isn't the only one who is feeling this, the whole class probably feels that way.
