The first time was Salvador Dali's "Christ of St John of the Cross"
The next was Van Gogh's "Church at Arles"
The last time was at the Sistene Chapel.
You can't really tell what a painting's like till you see it for real.
Does it count that I usually cry with frustration at my own paintings too?

I certainly have. It was while visiting the Uffizi in Florence. I was looking at Sandro Botticelli's Primavera and The Birth of Venus. I was overcome with emotion, perhaps not due to the paintings' content or skill, but simply because the artist had thrown unknown works into the bonfires of the vanities under the terrible reign of the monk Girolamo Savonarola. Such a waste.

For me it wasn't the painting itself... it was when I was in the south of France, seeing for the first time the landscapes from which Van Gogh painted.

Paja, I wonder if you're thinking of the church at Auvers-sur-Oise... if you've never actually been there, you really really should find a way. For a passionate Van Gogh fan, it's quite a moving experience... and it's just outside of Paris. Also, you can visit the cemetery where he and his brother Theo are buried side by side and covered by a blanket of ivy.
